What should I tell the dispatcher?

  1. Your location: the road, the direction and the nearest cross street, mile marker or landmark.
  2. The truck type, make, model and length.
  3. Whether it is loaded, and what the load is.
  4. Whether it is a rental truck. Some rental companies have their own roadside program, so check the agreement too.
  5. Where it should go: a truck repair shop, your yard or another address.

What should I do while I wait?

  1. Pull as far onto the shoulder as you can and turn on the hazard lights.
  2. Set warning triangles or flares behind the truck if you have them.
  3. Stay out of the cargo area and away from the traffic side.
  4. If the cargo has shifted or something is leaking, keep people away and tell the dispatcher.
  5. Have the registration and any rental paperwork ready.

Florida’s Move Over law requires drivers to move over a lane, or slow to 20 mph below the posted limit, for stopped tow trucks and disabled vehicles with warning lights. Details are on the FLHSMV Move Over page.

Is it a tow, or just a roadside fix?

Not every stopped box truck needs a tow. A dead battery can often be handled with a jump start, an empty tank with diesel delivery, and a truck that slid onto soft ground with a winch-out. Tell us what happened and we will tell you which service fits.
