What does winch-out mean?
A winch-out is when a tow truck uses its winch and cable to pull a vehicle out of a spot it can’t drive out of, such as mud, sand, a ditch or a soft shoulder. If the vehicle can be driven once it is out, no tow is needed. If it is damaged, we can tow it.

What should I tell the dispatcher?
- Your location: the road and the nearest cross street, mile marker or landmark, or a pin from your phone’s map.
- The vehicle: year, make, model, and whether it is loaded.
- Where it is stuck: mud, sand, a ditch or a soft shoulder, and how far from the road.
- Whether the vehicle is upright and whether anyone is hurt.
What should I do while I wait?
- Stop spinning the wheels. Spinning digs the tires deeper and can damage the vehicle.
- Turn on the hazard lights.
- If the vehicle is tilted or near water, get out on the safe side and move away from it.
- If anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
Florida’s Move Over law requires drivers to move over a lane, or slow to 20 mph below the posted limit, for stopped tow trucks and disabled vehicles with warning lights. Details are on the FLHSMV Move Over page.
What happens after the winch-out?
Once the vehicle is back on solid ground, check the tires and look underneath for anything dragging or leaking. If a tire is damaged, we can put on your spare. If the vehicle won’t drive safely, we can tow it to a repair shop.
