How do I stay safe with a flat tire?

  1. Slow down gradually and pull as far off the road as you can. Don’t stop on a curve or a bridge if you can avoid it.
  2. Turn on the hazard lights.
  3. If you get out, use the side away from traffic and wait well off the road.
  4. Don’t try to change a tire on the traffic side of a busy road. Call us instead.
  5. At night, stay visible and keep your phone charged.

Florida’s Move Over law requires drivers to move over a lane, or slow to 20 mph below the posted limit, for stopped tow trucks and disabled vehicles with warning lights. Details are on the FLHSMV Move Over page.

Is a spare tire a long-term fix?

No. Many spares are compact temporary tires with lower speed and distance limits, printed on the tire or in the owner’s manual. Get the flat repaired or replaced at a tire shop as soon as you can.
